This afternoon was a color-fest of flowers and cupcakes. Beau and Kristen made an emergency run to the new Crumbs Bake Shop that just opened down the block from Sprinkles (on little Santa Monica Blvd.) It was a need-to-know-mission; the girls and I were debating such issues as:
A: Why open a competing shop a block away from the most successful cupcakery in town?
B: Taste...Sprinkles cupcakes tend to be on the dry side. How would these measure up?
C: Attitude: Would the customer care people be kind, warm, and friendly like a bake shop, or cold and superior like some Rodeo Drive retailers have the reputation of presenting?
D: Cost...would they be stupidly ridiculously high, or fairly priced.
After much deliberation and sacrifice (of the tasting variety...) we came to this conclusion.
Crumbs cupcakes are far too large; more like a muffin than a cupcake. The flavor, so-so...not too dry, but not so yummy that any of the cakes had to be consumed in their entirety. The staff was pleasant, and the desired impression was made with the black Range Rover parked in front of the shop with the license plate "CRUMBS" proudly emblazoned on the bumper (never mind the meter maids!) The prices? Stupidly ridiculous. The box of twelve mini-cuppys ran $18. instead of the $9. the same box would run at the more delicious Buttercake Bakery. Overall consensus...not so good. Though I hate to be pessimistic, I give them six months.
Vote here please.
I liked brownie cupcake but even better was hostess looking one. There red velvet not so and to much topping for me most others. S
